History

The Ch. Montier & Cie was, before the war, one of the most successful car freelancing manufactures, specialized in luxurious and sports car editions, which was almost always based in Ford mechanical parts.

Charles Montier (28 June 1879 in Naples - June 1952 in Paris), known as "Le Sorcier", was a French dealer and car manufacturer who had become a pilot, among others a specialist in racing!

When he arrived in Paris start work in Pinède brand, he quickly opened his own workshop where he helped his own father. But business stagnated, and he then moved to Darracq after his military service, until 1911. Before the war he returned to his native region of Tours, obtaining a first Ford consignment for his new local garage and then at the end of the hostilities he still opened a trade in Paris, as well as in his suburbs thereafter, as garager-concessionaire this time.

His brother keeps the touraine business. Charles also became a car mechanic, turning Ford T into competition, known as "Ford Montier", between 1921 and 1923 (period when the car is illustrated by winning competitions from the first year). Then came the "Special" Montier in 1926, with a 90CV engine and a top speed of 170 km / h (this car will be the same second year of the Grand Prix of La Baule, behind Louis Wagner on Delage 2LCV3 ). In 1926, his father Henri was also involved in some events (notably the Grand Prix de Provence, where he was second in a qualifying round behind Rost).

Montier participated personally in the first three editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, between 1923 and 1925, to three others of the Grand Prix of Belgium (1930, where he ranks 6th, 1931, where he becomes 8th with "Ducolombier" and finally 1934, where he is still in 5th place, 55 years old), the Grand Prix of France 19304, and the Grand Prix of San Sebastián 1930.

He finished second in the Circuit des Routes Pavées in 1930, and third in the Grand Prix d'Orléans in 1935 (despite the non-renewal of his contract by Ford in 1934).

Charles Montier also often provided his vehicles on the coast to the Belgian Armaury Pety de Thozée, who obtained some other successes (including Asch-Diepenbeek near Hasselt in 1923, then Mont-Theux between Liège and Spa and La Sarte at Longs-Thiers near of Huyen two months later, in 1924). The Montier "Spéciale" car is also shown at the Spa Meetings from 1922 to 1924, achieving the best times.

Among other inventions, Charles Montier for the aviation was given the Montier passenger compartment lamp and a lateral visibility compass during the First World War, followed by factory manufacturing processes of acetylene as a fuel.

Nothing compared with the magic feeling when you touch a very special racecar from the era of 20s, if you are real courius why this French racer paited in a tradition Italian racing red you must know about the origins of Charles Montier. He was born in Naples Italy from an Italian mother and that explains a lot from his character and his talents! Vasileios Papaidis
